Listen first. That’s a principle we strive to practice in our philanthropy at Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation.

Through ongoing conversations and facilitated feedback, our nonprofit partners have told us that longer-term, more flexible funding would help them do their good work better, achieving more for the communities and people they serve.  We’ve also listened with openness to other leaders in our sector and looked closely at research that supports the value of such funding.

Moving forward, Barancik Foundation will begin transitioning our grantmaking toward multiyear, general operating support, reflecting our commitment to long-term partnership and organizational stability.

We believe this evolution in how we structure our funding will help our grantees create greater, more sustainable impact.

Why Multiyear, General Operating Support?

Multiyear, general operating support empowers nonprofits with flexibility, long-term stability, and trust.

By awarding multiyear grants without restrictions, we aim to support our partners’ organizational health and enable them to allocate resources where they’re needed most.  We want to help grantees plan for the future, adapt to changes, invest strategically, and innovate.

This all adds up to greater organizational capacity, stronger relationships with our partners, and improved ability to achieve the community results we seek together.

What Else?

As Barancik Foundation begins this transition, we’ll also introduce new tools to assist grantees in strengthening their organizational effectiveness and measuring their impact.  We will learn alongside our partners, understanding the root causes of the issues they address and ensuring they can build the long-term capacity to succeed.

To detail this new direction and preview the tools we will use, Barancik Foundation will host an event for our community partners this spring.  Meanwhile, our mission and the focus areas of our grantmaking remain unchanged.

In conjunction with our shift to multiyear, general operating support grants, we have initiated a strategic-planning process. We want to ensure that we continue to meet our mission and invest in the community change that Chuck and Margie Barancik sought in the most effective ways possible. This work, too, will prioritize listening and be centered in the voices of our community.
